Town Železný Brod - English version

History

Železný Brod is situated in the North Bohemia and its geographical location serves as a suitable entrance for visiting the surrounding mountains such as Krkonoše, Jizera Mountains as well as the unique natural habitat know as the Czech paradise.

The town of the glassmaking, natural beauties and national monuments has probably originated sometime in 11th century. Small settlement was originally called Brod (Ford) or Brodek (Small Ford) and in the 14th century got the attribute Železný (Iron) named after iron smelting works that were established in the area. The hot glass, jewellery, thermometers and small glass products, especially the so called figurine glass, pertain to the best-known article of Železný Brod.

Town Hall

Photo Town Hall of Železný Brod was built in 1890 from the primary wooden hall. Town Theatre (located in the first floor) and the Town Gallery of Vlastimil Rada (located on the ground floor) both reside within the town hall building. There is also the town’s coat-of-arms being displayed on the groud floor. The year of 1501, which is depicted in the coat-of-arms, represents the year of law restoration in the town that was carried out by the Czech king of Vladislav II.

Ethnographic exposition of The Town Museum in the one-storey, partly timbered house (former tannery and dye-house from 1807). Describes and portrays of the Železný Brod history, its architecture, archaeological discoveries, photocopy of records, half-precious stones from Kozákov, iron, slate, limestone, fossils and residue of sea, sculpture of sandstone, artwork by artist Mr. Scheybal, old classes and school's aids, gingerbread products and old baker's bread, flax processing tools, weaving room, textiles, printer's forms, some old clothing, wooden Bethlehems, old ski and sleds, models of citizen’s houses.

On the square of May 3rd in the former citizens timber house from the year 1792 (from the 1936 is part of the savings bank building) is the new exposition of the Železný Brod glass-making (glass-making room from the last century, personages of the local secondary glass school, businessmen and exporters of the 20th and 40th years of the 20th century, unique glass Bethlehem).

Open time:
8.30 am – 12.00 noon and 1 pm – 4 pm from May to September daily except Monday, from October to April only at the weekends.

Trávníky

Photo Reservation of monuments “Trávníky“ is situated behind the brooks Žernovník five minutes` walk from this place.

Along Železná street direction KORTAN firm. Standing in front of this building narrow path up on the right side could be seen. Climbing up this way passing empire house “Grosovsko” (NO 262), picturesque timbered houses in Zahradnická, Hluboká and Fr. Balatky lanes. Going down to Lesser Square (there is St. James Church with wooden belfry here). Remarkable house called “Jechovsko” and empire one called “Knopovsko” (NO 45) are worth seeing as well.
